How 'comprehension' excludes good interpretations



Why 'retrieval' and 'inference' are unsatisfactory means of determining how children interpret texts:

"Billy has a blue hat - what colour was his hat?"
"Blue."
"Correct. One mark."


"It was raining - why was he wearing a hat? "
"'Cos he supports Chelsea."
"Wrong - no mark."
